Great Progress on Course Recovery
We’re delighted to report that the weather has finally been on our side, allowing us to complete our ambitious autumn overseeding programme. The club has invested in 4 tons of specially selected seed and purchased our own Campey Aeraseeder — a clear sign of our commitment to continually improving playing surfaces for all members.
Fairway Improvements
If you’ve played the 11th and 16th fairways recently, you’ll have noticed the excellent germination of new grass. The Campey Aeraseeder creates over 1,500 small holes per square metre, ensuring optimal seed-to-soil contact. Combined with recent rainfall and warm soil temperatures, germination has occurred within just 7–10 days of application.
Why These Seed Varieties?
Our custom seed mix has been specially formulated by professional seed specialists and includes:
•
Tetraploid Ryegrass – exceptional wear tolerance, fast recovery from divots, and denser growth
•
Creeping Fescue – fine texture, drought resistance, and natural self-repair through its creeping growth pattern.
Together, these varieties will create more resilient, year-round fairways that thrive in changing weather conditions.
Preparing for Climate Change
As we've all witnessed in recent years, our weather patterns are becoming increasingly unpredictable, with more frequent extremes and prolonged drought periods. The seed varieties we've selected have been specifically chosen with these challenges in mind.
The Creeping Fescue component is particularly valuable for its exceptional drought tolerance, maintaining colour and playability even during extended dry spells when irrigation may be restricted. Meanwhile, the Tetraploid Ryegrass varieties possess deeper root systems than traditional grasses, allowing them to access moisture at lower soil levels and recover more quickly after stress periods.
This forward-thinking approach ensures our course remains playable and attractive throughout the year, regardless of what weather challenges lie ahead. By investing now in climate-resilient grass varieties, we're protecting the quality of your golfing experience for years to come.
Greens Update
Our greens have also been over sown and we're already seeing encouraging signs of germination. To protect these establishing grass plants during their critical early growth phase, we've temporarily increased the height of cut slightly on the greens. This adjustment will help the new seedlings establish strong root systems without being stressed by close mowing.
We anticipate returning to normal cutting heights once the new grass is fully established, typically within 3-4 weeks.
What This Means for Your Game
The investment in our own equipment means we can maintain this overseeding programme annually, progressively improving grass density and playing surfaces year on year. While there may be minor temporary adjustments during establishment periods, the long-term benefits will significantly enhance your playing experience.
Thank you for your patience and continued support as we work to improve our course for everyone's enjoyment.
